Objective 1.10

200-301

Verify IP parameters for Client OS (Windows, Mac OS, Linux).

Objective 1.10 sits in Network Fundamentals, which carries 20% of the CCNA exam. The questions below are original, written from the official objective title above, and each explanation cites the Cisco page it rests on.

1-10Network Fundamentals

A workstation cannot reach any server after a switch upgrade.

C:\>ipconfig /all Ethernet adapter Ethernet:    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I219-LM DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.83.17(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

What does this output show?

The client received an address but no gateway optionA reply missing the gateway option would still carry a routable subnet, not one out of the reserved range.
The client holds a lease from a rogue DHCP serverA rogue server would still hand out a routable address and a gateway. Nothing in 169.254 comes from a lease.
The client assigned itself an address after no DHCP replyCorrect · your answerCorrect. The 169.254 address is what Windows assigns itself when no server answers.
The adapter has a static address entered by an administratorA static entry appears as IPv4 Address with DHCP Enabled reading No, and this adapter reports the opposite.

Correct.

Concept

A host set to obtain its configuration automatically does not simply give up when nothing answers. It falls back to a self-assigned address drawn from a reserved block, which keeps the adapter usable on the local wire while signalling plainly that no server replied.

Why C

The 169.254.0.0 to 169.254.255.255 range is reserved for Automatic Private IP Addressing, and Windows uses it when a DHCP client gets no answer. This adapter reports DHCP enabled, an autoconfiguration address in that range and an empty gateway, which is the signature of the fallback rather than of any lease.

Source

If the 'Autoconfiguration Enabled' line says "Yes", and the 'Autoconfiguration IP Address' is 169.254.x.y (where x.y is the client's unique identifier), then the computer is using APIPA.
