Objective 1.3

200-301

Compare physical interface and cabling types.

Objective 1.3 sits in Network Fundamentals, which carries 20% of the CCNA exam. The questions below are original, written from the official objective title above, and each explanation cites the Cisco page it rests on.

1-3Network Fundamentals

A 40-Gigabit uplink between two Catalyst 9300 switches is being cabled with parallel optics. Which fiber connector does the installation guide list for that link?

RJ-45 eight-pin twisted-pair connectorRJ-45 terminates the copper 10/100/1000 ports. A fiber uplink never lands on twisted pair.
Duplex LC fiber-optic cable connectorDuplex LC pairs one transmit strand with one receive strand. That is what an SFP+ takes, not a 12-strand ribbon.
MPO-12 multi-fiber push on connectorCorrect · your answerCorrect. This is the 12-fiber parallel termination the 9300 uses for 40G and 100G.
Simplex SC single-fiber optic connectorSC is a single-strand body, and its similar footprint is exactly why the parallel connector gets mistaken for it.

Correct.

Concept

Fiber terminations differ by how many strands they present at the ferrule. A serial optical link needs one transmit strand and one receive strand, while parallel optics spread one logical link across a ribbon of strands, so the termination has to carry the whole ribbon at once.

Why C

The 12-fiber multi-fiber push on termination conforms to the TIA/EIA-604-5 intermateability standard, and the 9300 guide names it as the one used for establishing 40G and 100G optical parallel connections. Its footprint is close to an SC simplex body, which is where the confusion usually starts.

Source

MPO-12 Connectors The multi-fiber push on (MPO) connector is a 12-fiber optical connector with a footprint similar to the SC simplex connector. The MPO connector conforms to the TIA/EIA-604-5 intermateability standard. It is used for establishing 40G and 100G optical parallel connections.
