What the exam tests

Exam domains

Put your study time where the weight is, with the caveat below.

Red Hat publishes the RHCSA objectives without weightings and grades the exam on completing hands-on tasks rather than by domain. The even split shown here is ours, to convey the scope of the objectives, not an official Red Hat weighting.

Opens next. The first practice exam opens at 60 verified questions, spread across all 10 domains.

Every question here is verified against vendor documentation before it serves, which is why the count grows slowly.

Where to focus: RHCSA is passed at the keyboard. The most effective preparation is a Red Hat Enterprise Linux virtual machine you rebuild until every objective, from LVM to SELinux to systemd units, is muscle memory rather than something you look up.

What the exam actually asks you to do

Entirely hands-on. There are no multiple choice questions: you work on a live Red Hat Enterprise Linux system and are scored on the state of the system when time runs out.

RHCSA practice exams

No complete practice exam yet. A form is 60 questions apportioned to the official weightings, and a partial one would report a score that means nothing, so none is assembled until the questions are there.

Where RHCSA fits

An honest study plan

  1. 1. Read the official objectives first

Download the official objectives from Red Hat and skim every line. The exam can only test what’s listed there, it’s the contract.

  2. 2. Weight your study toward Understand and use essential tools and Manage software

Together the top two domains are 20% of the exam. Practice them until your accuracy is consistently above 80%.

  3. 3. Drill weak domains, then sit a numbered practice exam

Use Domain Drill on your weakest areas, then sit a full-length form under exam conditions: 60 questions in 150 minutes, scored against the published pass mark. Book the real exam when you are consistently clearing that, not before.

Frequently asked questions

Is RHCSA hands-on?

Entirely. There are no multiple choice questions. You work on a live Red Hat Enterprise Linux system and are scored on the state of that system when time runs out, which is why it carries more weight than a written exam and is far harder to pass without doing the work.

How much does the RHCSA exam cost?

The EX200 exam is $500 in the United States. Red Hat's official training courses cost much more and are usually employer funded, but you can prepare on a free Red Hat Developer subscription and public documentation.

RHCSA or CompTIA Linux+?

Linux+ is vendor neutral and multiple choice; RHCSA is Red Hat specific and entirely practical. RHCSA carries more weight in Red Hat Enterprise Linux shops and is harder to fake, because every task is graded on a real system rather than recognised in a list.

How long is RHCSA valid?

Three years. You renew by passing the current RHCSA again or by earning a higher Red Hat certification such as RHCE, which extends the whole certification.

Which Red Hat Enterprise Linux version does RHCSA test?

The current EX200 exam is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10.

RHCSA is not for sale yet. A certification goes on sale when it has a complete practice exam behind it, and this one does not, so there is nothing here worth charging for. Everything published is free to answer in the meantime.
