How much does Red Hat Certified System Administrator cost?

The largest saving available here is free, and Red Hat hands it to you. A Red Hat Developer subscription costs nothing and gives an individual a licensed copy of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which is the same system the exam is set on. Install it in a virtual machine and then rebuild that machine repeatedly: grow LVM volumes, set SELinux contexts and booleans, write and enable systemd units, create users and groups with the permissions the task asks for, configure networking with nmcli, and run a container or two. The preparation that actually works costs nothing beyond the computer you already own.

The second saving is not paying twice. A retake is another $500, which takes the exam line from $500 to $1,000 and is worth more than every other cost on this page combined. On a task-graded exam, the cheapest insurance is timed rehearsal: write yourself a task list, set 150 minutes on a clock, and work a freshly installed machine to completion. Book when you are finishing with time to spare rather than finishing exactly.

If your employer runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux, ask them to pay. This is one of the easier certifications to justify on a purchase order, because the objectives map onto the systems the business already runs rather than onto a general topic. Red Hat's own training courses run into the thousands and are usually funded the same way. If you are paying for yourself, the Red Hat Learning Subscription is worth pricing only if you intend to sit more than one Red Hat exam, since it bundles courses and attempts together rather than selling attempts one at a time.

Do not buy training before you have tried the free route for a fortnight. Two weeks of rebuilding a virtual machine against the published objectives tells you exactly which areas you cannot do unaided, and that list is usually much shorter than a full course. Buying structure for four topics is a different purchase from buying a syllabus you already have.

Red Hat charges full price for a second attempt: another $500. Nothing carries forward, so the tasks you completed on the first sitting are tasks you complete again on the second.

A failure here is more diagnosable than a failure on a written paper. You needed 210 of the 300 points available, and the shortfall is nearly always one of two things: work you could not do at all, or work you could do but not inside 150 minutes. Those want different fixes. The first is study, the second is rehearsal, and treating one as the other is how a second attempt goes the same way as the first.

You can drop 90 points and still pass, which means an unfinished task is survivable. What is not survivable is a habit of leaving configuration that does not come back after a restart, because that loses points on work you actually did. Red Hat's objectives require your configuration to persist after a reboot without intervention. Rebooting before you call a task done is the cheapest points insurance in the exam, and it costs about a minute.

Before booking again, rebuild the lab from scratch and time yourself against a task list until you finish twice with room left. Rebooking quickly because the fee stings is how people end up paying $1,000 for one certification.

Valid for three years. Renew by passing the current RHCSA exam or by earning a higher Red Hat certification. There is no continuing education route: Red Hat renews on exams rather than on accumulated credits, so a renewal is another live system and another clock.

The direct route costs $500 every three years at whatever the price is then. The cheaper route in practice is going upward. Earning RHCE or a higher Red Hat certification extends the certification you already hold, so an administrator who moves on to automation work never pays a standalone RHCSA renewal at all.

Plan for the platform to have moved. The current exam is set on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10, and by the time three years are up it will be set on something newer, with different defaults and different tooling around the same tasks. A renewal is real study on a real system rather than a form, which is the price of a credential that still means something on the day someone reads it.

Budget the cycle rather than the exam. Over six years, one pass and one renewal is $1,000 plus lab time, and if you take RHCE somewhere in the middle it is less than that. Against the cost of running Red Hat Enterprise Linux professionally, the certification is the small number.

Preparation for RHCSA can genuinely cost nothing. The realistic range people spend is $0 to $400, and the top of that range buys convenience rather than a better chance of passing.
