How hard is Security+?

CompTIA classifies Security+ at the intermediate level. It is multiple choice and performance-based, sat in 90 minutes. No invented pass rates anywhere on this page.

The short answer

CompTIA Security+ is a mid-level exam. It assumes working familiarity with the field it covers.

With a year or two of hands-on exposure to the subject area, preparation is mostly review plus practice under the clock, with real gaps to close where an adjacent role never touched the material. Coming in cold, plan for more study time and use the objectives list to find what you have never touched.

What actually makes it hard

  • The items are not all multiple choice.

Multiple choice, multiple response, and performance-based questions. The performance-based items drop you into a simulated console, network diagram, or configuration screen and score what you actually do. They take longer than a multiple-choice question, and you have to perform the task rather than recognize an answer.

  • Breadth across domains.

The blueprint spans 5 domains and the exam samples all of them. The heaviest, Security Operations, is 28 percent of the exam; the lightest, General Security Concepts, 12 percent.

  • The clock.

Maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes is about one minute each, including the time to read the stem and the options. Reading about the exam does not rehearse that pace; a full-length sitting against the clock does.

Where the weight sits

Difficulty is not spread evenly. CompTIA publishes the domain weightings, and they tell you where your study time buys the most points:

  • Security Operations28%
  • Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations22%
  • Security Program Management and Oversight20%
  • Security Architecture18%
  • General Security Concepts12%

Where candidates struggle: Security Operations is the heaviest domain at 28 percent. Give it proportionally more study time than the others.

What to hold first

CompTIA recommends coming to Security+ with Network+ level knowledge. That is a recommendation, not a gate: nothing stops you booking directly. Skipping it does not remove the assumed material; it moves it into your study plan.
