How much does Microsoft Azure Administrator cost?

The biggest saving on this exam is passing it the first time. A second attempt takes the exam line to $330, which is more than every other cost on this page put together. AZ-104 punishes people who studied by reading, so the cheapest thing you can do is spend the extra fortnight in the portal before you book.

After that, use the free material properly. The Microsoft Learn path and the free practice assessment are the official preparation, and courses selling AZ-104 prep for several hundred dollars are mostly reorganising them. If you are a verified student at an accredited institution, Microsoft sells exams at a reduced student rate, which is a straight cut off the $165.

Check the exam page before you book. Microsoft periodically runs offers that include a free retake with an exam purchase, and they appear and disappear without much notice. The free voucher offers attached to virtual training days have generally covered fundamentals exams rather than role-based ones, so do not build your AZ-104 budget around getting one.

Control the lab bill, because it is the cost that creeps. Set a budget alert on the subscription on day one, deallocate virtual machines instead of shutting them down inside the guest OS, and delete the whole resource group after each session. A VPN gateway left running for a fortnight costs more than the book you were deciding whether to buy.

A retake is another $165. There is no reduced price, no partial credit for the skills areas you passed, and no carry-over of anything from the first attempt.

Microsoft's timing rules are stricter than CompTIA's. You wait 24 hours after a failed first attempt, then 14 days before the third attempt and 14 days before each one after that, with a limit of five attempts on the same exam in twelve months.

The 24 hour window tempts people into rebooking immediately, and on this exam that is usually wrong. AZ-104 failures are hands-on failures: the candidate could describe network security groups but had never watched a deny rule at a lower priority do nothing, or knew the storage redundancy names without knowing which one survives a region loss. One day does not close that gap.

Read the score report before you decide anything. Microsoft gives you a bar per skills area, so it tells you which part of the Learn path to redo. Then rebuild the failing area in the portal from an empty resource group, without following a lab guide, and book again when you can do it from memory. Two attempts is $330, and a month of practice costs nothing.

AZ-104 is valid for one year, and renewal is free. Microsoft opens an unproctored online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn six months before your expiry date. It is open book, you take it at your desk, and you can retake it if you do not pass. The cost is the hour it takes.

The thing to protect is the window, not the money. If the certification lapses you cannot renew it, and getting it back means paying $165 and sitting the full proctored exam again. Put the expiry date in a calendar with a reminder at the six month mark, on the day you pass rather than eleven months later.

The renewal assessment tracks the current skills outline, so it also does a useful job: it tells you what changed in Azure this year. Treat it as the annual read of the blueprint rather than an administrative task.

Total cost of ownership after the exam is $0 and about an hour a year. There is no annual maintenance fee of the kind ISC2 charges and no continuing education units to log the way CompTIA requires.
