How much does Associate Cloud Engineer cost?

A second attempt takes the exam line to $250, and the real cost of failing is the calendar rather than the fee: you wait 14 days for a second attempt, 60 days for a third and 365 days for a fourth, with four attempts allowed in any two year period. Certify once and the next fee is discounted. Google puts a 50 percent discount code in the Benefits section of your CM Connect account, and it applies to a renewal attempt. Failing does not earn one.

Students have a route worth checking. Google offers a half-price attempt through faculty-facilitated Career Launchpad cohorts, and it covers this exam and Cloud Digital Leader only, provided you complete the required learning path. If you are enrolled anywhere with a Google Cloud program, ask before you pay list price.

Spend your money on console time rather than on video. The exam guide is free, the documentation is free, and $300 of trial credit buys more Compute Engine, GKE and Cloud Run than this exam asks about. Sixty percent of the exam is building a solution and then operating it, and neither of those is a reading skill.

A retake is another $125 at full price. There is no partial credit and no discount for a second attempt.

The certification is valid for three years, and the renewal window opens 180 days before it goes inactive. There are three ways through it and they are not equivalent.

The renewal exam is the cheapest exam route: one hour, 20 questions, $75 rather than the full fee, and it adds three years from the date you sit it. You can only take it inside the renewal window, so a diary entry at the 180 day mark is worth making on the day you pass rather than in year three.

The Google Skills renewal path is free of exam fees and adds one year rather than three. Designated courses and skill badges count when you complete them within the last year of your certification's active period. It suits somebody who wants to stay current continuously; it does not suit somebody who wants to stop thinking about renewal for three years.

Sitting the standard exam again at $125 is the third route and the one to avoid needing. If your certification lapses you have 30 days to renew by exam and keep your Series ID; past that, you are taking the full standard exam again at full price. The 50 percent discount code from your last pass applies to a renewal attempt, so plan to use it rather than let it sit.

Over six years, the realistic figure is one $125 exam and one renewal exam, which is less than the cost of a single professional-level exam at any of the three big clouds.
