Cisco CCNA: the honest guide
CCNA is the networking certification that still means something specific. Pass it and a hiring manager knows you can subnet without a calculator, read a routing table, configure a VLAN, and reason about why a link is down. That is a narrower and more verifiable claim than most certifications make.
It is also harder than the certifications around it, mainly because of the format. The exam includes simulations where you configure real device software and simlets where several questions hang off one topology. You cannot memorise your way through either.
Who CCNA is for
A good fit if
- You want a networking role and need proof you can configure equipment, not just describe it.
- You already do some network work and want the credential to match.
- You are heading toward network security or infrastructure and want the strongest foundation available.
- You work in an environment running Cisco equipment, which is a large share of enterprises.
Probably not, if
- You want a vendor-neutral credential. Network+ covers similar ground without the Cisco-specific configuration.
- You are aiming at cloud rather than infrastructure. AZ-900 or AWS Cloud Practitioner maps far more directly.
- You have no networking exposure at all and want something quick. CCNA is a real commitment; Network+ is the gentler entry.
Is CCNA worth it?
For anyone serious about networking, yes. CCNA is the most respected associate-level networking certification and the configuration skills it forces you to build transfer directly to the job. It is one of the few certifications where the study genuinely makes you better at the work.
For someone who wants a networking credential on a CV without going deep, Network+ is the better trade. It is vendor-neutral, cheaper, and considerably less demanding, and many employers accept either.
For anyone heading into cloud or security without an infrastructure role in between, CCNA is more depth than the destination needs. The time would go further on a cloud certification.

Study plans by experience level
New to networking
16 to 20 weeks at 10 hours
- 1Weeks 1 to 4: network fundamentals and IPv4 subnetting. Subnet until it is arithmetic rather than a puzzle. Everything after this assumes it.
- 2Weeks 5 to 8: switching, VLANs, and network access. Build every topology in Packet Tracer as you read about it.
- 3Weeks 9 to 12: IP connectivity and routing, which is 25 percent of the exam and the largest single domain. Static routes first, then OSPF.
- 4Weeks 13 to 15: IP services, security fundamentals, and automation. Lighter domains, but automation is often skipped and reliably examined.
- 5Weeks 16 to 20: configuration practice under time pressure, then full mocks. The simulations are the part to rehearse most.
Coming from Network+ or a support role
10 to 12 weeks at 8 to 10 hours
- 1Week 1: subnetting speed drills. Network+ teaches subnetting; CCNA expects it fast enough not to cost you exam time.
- 2Weeks 2 to 5: Cisco configuration. This is the real gap between Network+ and CCNA, and Packet Tracer is where you close it.
- 3Weeks 6 to 8: routing in depth, particularly OSPF, which is examined more thoroughly than Network+ prepares you for.
- 4Weeks 9 to 10: automation and programmability, which has no Network+ equivalent and is 10 percent of the blueprint.
- 5Weeks 11 to 12: timed simulations and full mocks.
Already working with Cisco equipment
6 to 8 weeks at 6 hours
- 1Read the exam topics blueprint and mark everything outside your daily work. For most working engineers that is automation, and often OSPF specifics.
- 2Study the marked topics only. Familiarity with production kit does not mean familiarity with the blueprint.
- 3Rehearse configuration under time pressure. Knowing the commands and typing them fast enough are different skills, and the exam tests the second one.
- 4Full mocks in the last fortnight, with the simulations timed strictly.
Common mistakes
Buying hardware
Packet Tracer is free, made by Cisco, and covers the blueprint. Second-hand switches cost hundreds and teach cabling. This is the most expensive avoidable mistake on this certification.
Studying from video without a terminal open
The exam includes simulations where you type commands under time pressure. Watching someone else configure a router builds recognition, not the ability to do it.
Leaving subnetting until it feels comfortable enough
Subnetting appears throughout the exam and slowly is the same as wrongly when the clock is running. It should be automatic before you move on to routing.
Skipping automation and programmability
It is 10 percent of the blueprint, it is the newest section, and it is the one candidates from traditional networking backgrounds most often ignore.
Underestimating the time budget
Roughly 100 questions in 120 minutes, with simulations that eat several minutes each. Candidates who have not rehearsed under time run out of it.
What comes after passing
CCNA is valid for three years, and Cisco gives you three renewal routes: 30 continuing education credits, passing CCNA again, or passing any higher Cisco exam. There is no separate annual maintenance fee, so the continuing education route can cost nothing beyond time.
The professional track is next if you stay in networking: ENCOR and then a concentration exam for CCNP Enterprise. Passing ENCOR renews CCNA at the same time.
If security is the direction, CCNA is unusually good preparation for Security+ and for network security work generally, because you already understand the traffic the controls are acting on.
