The short answer
Associate Cloud Engineer is a mid-level exam. It assumes working familiarity with the field it covers.
With a year or two of hands-on exposure to the subject area, preparation is mostly review plus practice under the clock, with real gaps to close where an adjacent role never touched the material. Coming in cold, plan for more study time and use the objectives list to find what you have never touched.
What actually makes it hard
Recognition is not understanding.
The format is multiple choice and multiple select. The wrong options are written to look right to someone who learned the terms without the concept behind them.
Breadth across domains.
The blueprint spans 4 domains and the exam samples all of them. The heaviest, Planning and implementing a cloud solution, is 30 percent of the exam; the lightest, Configuring access and security, 20 percent.
The clock.
50-60 questions in 120 minutes is about 2.4 minutes each at the low end of that range, and less at the top of it, including the time to read the stem and the options. Reading about the exam does not rehearse that pace; a full-length sitting against the clock does.
Where the weight sits
Difficulty is not spread evenly. Google Cloud publishes the domain weightings, and they tell you where your study time buys the most points:

Where candidates struggle: Sections 2 and 3 carry 30% each, so 60% of the exam is building a solution and then operating it. Time on the console and in gcloud against Compute Engine, GKE and Cloud Run is worth more than reading.
What to hold first
Google Cloud recommends coming to Associate Cloud Engineer with Cloud Digital Leader level knowledge. That is a recommendation, not a gate: nothing stops you booking directly. Skipping it does not remove the assumed material; it moves it into your study plan.
